Dear Ms Hart:
I am the Deputy Archivist of the United States. John Carlin, the
Archivist, has asked that I contact you regarding the resolution that Rick
Barry has mentioned. The National Archives supports any resolution that
would stress the importance of preserving our digital heritage that documents
the rights of citizens, the accountability of governments, as well as our
cultural heritage.
I also recognize that the U.S. is not an official member of UNESCO, but only an
observer. Nor do I know to what extent you are free to express this
nation's views on such matters. Therefore, consistent with U.S. policy
and the UNESCO rules relating to observer status, we defer to you on how
to proceed. We appreciate any appropriate efforts that would further this
cause. Thank you.
